We don’t need to be heroes to be helpful

Stefan Kertesz | TEDxBirminghamSalon

In this humorous TEDx Talk, Dr. Stefan Kertesz shares a serious idea about how our thoughts of heroes may be undermining society’s ability to make a real impact for those most in need. He shares a few pointers from his time working in homeless healthcare for how all of us ordinary people can do some good work and make a difference in the world.

Dr. Stefan Kertesz, MD, focuses his clinical work, research, and community advocacy on efforts to improve the care of individuals who are homeless, disadvantaged, or who have addictions. He directs a special primary care clinic focused on homeless veterans at the Birmingham VA Medical Center. Over the past 10 years he has conducted research to learn how the experiences of homeless patients can be used to guide health care providers toward providing care, and on the consequences and treatment of addiction.
