Blog

Originally presented on March 2nd, 2011 at TED Long Beach: The Rediscovery of Wonder, this video tracks how the TEDx program has grown into a worldwide movement. Featuring video clips and photos from a few of the 1,579 TEDx events that have occured since the program’s inception in March 2009. Also featuring short interviews with the organizers of TEDxSeoul, TEDxAmsterdam, our very own TEDxYouth@Tokyo, TEDxChange and TEDxAmazonia.

When, in 2009, TEDxTokyo co-founder Patrick Newell began inviting speakers for what was to be the very first TED event to be held outside of the USA, he couldn’t have known the phenomenal success that the movement was set to enjoy. With hundreds of TEDx events now held every year from locations as diverse as Akure (Nigeria) to Zagreb (Croatia), TEDx brings inspiration and opportunity to local communities worldwide.

On Tuesday February 15th, Patrick will be a special guest speaker at the Forum for Corporate Communications (FCC) Monthly Dinner Meeting, sharing his insight into the thought processes behind TED and TEDxTokyo, and how speakers from very diverse backgrounds get their messages across in a mere 18 minutes.

Patrick will also touch upon his other projects and businesses; Living Dreams, an NPO that empowers and enriches the lives of over 1,000 orphans from over 25 childrens’ homes in Japan, Tokyo International School, which he founded, and 21:21 – working to provide 21st Century learning for 21st Century learners.

TEDxYouth@Tokyo – A Big Success

Added November 23rd, 2010 by joseph

What do a middle school student, world champion juggler, social entrepreneur, Pulitzer Prize winner, car designer, skateboarder, world champion yo-yo artist and a jazz singer have in common?
They all presented at TEDxYouth@Tokyo!

One of 61 TEDxYouthDay events happening around the world, TEDxYouth@Tokyo, held at Tokyo International School, was organised and run by a team of 11-18 year olds whom together had put together a stunning lineup of speakers and entertainment.

The core theme – Youth2Youth – was clear from the moment of arrival at reception: anyone looking over-age was asked to present their student ID cards!

As well as almost all presenters being 18 or under, the MCs, stage management team and tech teams were also staffed entirely by young volunteers, many of whom were taking on these roles for the first time.

Between the event’s three sessions participants could be found rock-climbing, skateboarding, watching other TEDxYouthDays happening around the world on laptops, chilling out in the chill lounge – or taking part in the impromptu rave on the main stage!

iPod touches linked to the TEDxYouth@Tokyo Twitter account were handed out for participants to tweet the proceedings, whilst the backstage livestream camera crew (one of two channels used to live broadcast the event) carried out a number of interviews during break times, capturing the feel of the event from the participant’s perspective.

To emphasise the global nature of TEDxYouthDay, live Skype video calls were included in the program, with the local team connecting with other TEDxYouthDay events in Singapore, Ipoh (Malaysia) , Hong Kong and Taipei.

And with this being Japan, instead of clapping, participants showed their appreciation for presenters by waving specially made fans featuring the unique TEDxYouth@Tokyo poster design shown above.

Overall, the event was a huge success, with participants describing it as a fun, inspiring, unforgettable experience.

To see all of the photos from the event (taken by one of our 11-year-old volunteers) view our set on Flickr. Video from the event is also available here (Technical issues mean that audio is missing in some parts!)

Our thanks to the TEDx team for coordinating this global movement – the TEDxYouth@Tokyo crew looks forward to taking part in future youth-centered events.

TEDxTokyo 2011: Enter the Unknown

Added November 9th, 2010 by TEDxTokyo

21st May 2011, Miraikan Tokyo

When TEDxTokyo launched in 2009 it was only the second event of its kind to be held anywhere in the world – and the first to be held outside of the US.

TEDxTokyo 2010, Hit Reset, saw us build on the success of the previous year with an impressive lineup of 25 speakers from both Japan and abroad, bringing deep insight and a wealth of rich ideas to the stage. 300 guests joined us at the Miraikan, with over 7,000 others tuning in to our bilingual live streams from 57 countries.

On May 21st 2011 we invite you to join us as we Enter the Unknown. Our third TEDxTokyo event promises to be bigger and better than ever as we bring together an even wider range of speakers and participants to share ideas and inspiration and what the future has in store…

We are now accepting applications from potential sponsors. If your company is interested in supporting the TEDxTokyo movement, please contact us at sponsor@tedxtokyo.com.

TEDxTokyo is a 100% voluntary event, which has evolved around a collaborative community of people passionate about sharing ideas.

What does an eleven-year old professional guitarist, world champion juggler, Pulitzer Prize winner, skateboarder, world champion Yo-Yo performer, entrepreneur and car designer have in common?

They’re all presenting at TEDxYouth@Tokyo on Saturday November 20th!

On November 20th, join three-hundred intelligent, articulate, precocious young students gathering to share ideas, form connections and build skills as part of a global event which now has over 50 planned events around the world.

The one-day conference is being held at Tokyo International School from 10am – 3pm (JST) on Saturday November 20th, and is being simultaneously streamed live online here.

Speakers will share their ideas in six ~ twelve minute talks and performances. Download the full program here.

Regarding Youth Day, TED Curator Chris Anderson said:

“This day started off as an experimental idea, and in a few short weeks has blossomed into something much bigger than we’d imagined. Its been astonishing to see the level of passion with which people want to bring TED -like presentations to a younger audience. Quite where it leads, we’re not sure, but we could not be more excited.”

Live streams

All of our live video streams, Flickr photo uploads and Twitter updates are being managed and updated by TEDxYouth@Tokyo participants. We’d love to hear from you so do feel free to tweet back at us, or comment on our Facebook Page.

The mainstage camera will remain focused on talks and performances throughout the day, and capture some of the atmosphere during our two breaks.

The backstage camera will give a different angle on performances, but will really come into its own during the two breaks from 11:00 ~ 11:30am and 12:30pm ~ 2:00pm, featuring interviews with organisers and participants and other backstage footage!
